The problems that a lot of writers on the msg board are experiencing is systemic in martial arts, a lack of confidence against what are untrained attackers.
You train for self defence but end up with 20yrs of zenkutsu dachi and kiba dachi etc which have no value whatsoever, might be good for strengthening but unfortunately no good in a fight.
Yet the technicalities of such stances are horrendous foot over the knee tension. Most fighters that you come up against will only have a couple of techniques - me i'm over swimming with them, and too many to bring to mind in a fight.

The people that will attack you dont care about stance and good technique they just hit you.
Karate men that have been training for nearly 40yrs - you will see them at reality seminars as they have no confidence in all the technical jargon
that they have learnt.
I work the door, and have never done ushiro geri - yet i trained to whip round like lightning waste of time, same with blocks when someone is going to attack you would be lucky to use a block as distance even if kept will close, too fast and you could be in shock at being attacked, the guys that know how to work distance and strike first are the winners with simple techniques.
I had a situation with a karate man at the Blackbird pub, soon as he dropped into his stance with hands at midsection height my so called mate lost his bottle , i tried to talk the guy down but knew violence was iminent so soon as he stepped back i started my mawashi and he met it with his ear with his hands at midsection and he fell backwards down a flight of stairs as
the reception was upstairs. apparently he was a third dan and usually a nice guy according to his wife who also tried attacking me! I dont know what style or who he is but dropping into zenkutsu dachi and waving his hands about was a big mistake, incidently i didnt know i was going to use mawashi geri i was as surprised as him when it hit - it just hit by its self as a reflex.
This at the time i put down to standing on the door and deliberately running techniques through my mind over and over im sure that it was down to that rather than the workouts.
My point is if martial arts are any good - how come we worry so much about
fighting when the scum out there dont and they've got nothing half the time when you get into them?
